When Hank’s son described his dad’s job as ‘driving the car’ Hank knew it was time to come out of retirement. Now he’s building a STEAM education empire with Steamoji.
Having already built and sold two businesses, Hank turned his entrepreneurial skills to solving the problem of STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Art & Math)educational provision.
The Wolf and Hank dive into why STEAM subjects should be a national priority, how to develop growth mindsets in children, and why in-person training centers are the point of differentiation for Steamoji.
You’ll also hear Hank reveal his revenue-building tactics for franchise success.
Steamoji’s newest corporate location was recently featured in Franchising.com:
Steamoji – a STEM maker academy designed to enrich student’s typical studies, is gearing up to open their new corporate location in Redmond, WA on October 22nd. Located at 16630 Redmond Way, Redmond, Washington, the innovative brand focuses on introducing their students, referred to as apprentices, to new technologies in fabrication, physical computing, engineering, digital arts, coding, and applied design.
I’m Adam Hart and I’m a partner and Academy Director at Steamoji Kitsilano.
Why did you franchise a Steamoji academy?
I decided to franchise a Steamoji academy because I saw that the way the world’s changing we’re seeing diminishing returns on traditional education over time. At the same time, we’re seeing opportunistic growth in technologies and educational tools provided that can give kids a better start to grow creatively and to be more prepared for the future.
Why did you choose Steamoji over other academies?
I chose Steamoji over other opportunities because first of all i think that the brand really connects with children. I think that the curriculum is broad enough that it provides exposure to lots of technologies and opportunities for kids in the future and in their careers and education but most of all because kids are excited to come here. Our apprentices leave stoked and after a month of coming here you can see it’s apparent that they have a new enthusiasm for STEM education, technology and the opportunities it provides.
What do you hope to achieve over the next 5 years?
I hope in five years we’re integrated well within the community. I hope that we’re involved in after school programs and we’re brought into schools for seminars to expose kids to STEM education. I hope that we’re recognized as one of the best providers of this type of education. I also hope that we can have five academies in five years across Greater Vancouver.
What message would you like to share with your local community?
We just opened in Kitsilano and I would love to invite you down to check out our academy and see if it’s right for you and your kids. We’re currently offering free trials so your kids can come into a project in robotics or 3D printing and you can see if it’s right for you guys.

Steamoji is the leading franchise brand in the high-growth, emerging category of STEM education centers for kids.
Steamoji is now open in the heart of Kerrisdale near the intersection of 41st Street and Arbutus across from Point Grey Secondary School.
Steamoji is a STEM maker academy for kids that has the mission to train the next generation of innovators. Technological change is accelerating. Many parents recognize STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) are fundamental in preparing their children for the careers of the future, but see schools more focused on traditional studies. Steamoji’s 400-hour curriculum is designed to fill the gap in a structured and reinforcing fashion across each subject pathway. Students are taught basic skills, then encouraged to practically apply them in the spirit of “Build to Solve”.
Steamoji’s Kerrisdale location builds on the initial success of the brand’s flagship corporate location at the Park Royal Shopping Centre in West Vancouver where Steamoji’s co-founder, Hank Horkoff, is currently training his two sons to become Master Makers.
Steamoji Nation continues to grow quickly. We look forward to announcing our initial cohort of franchise partners in the new year. They are busy working to open academies in their local communities.

West Vancouver is Steamoji’s first corporate location. Steamoji’s Co-Founder, Hank Horkoff, created Steamoji to help teach his own two young sons STEM skills and this is where they continue to enjoy their weekly 2 sessions developing their skills.
Steamoji started at Park Royal at a ‘pop-up’ location in September 2020 and, despite the challenges presented by COVID-19 lockdowns was able to reach profitability within months.
This early success has inspired many parents of existing apprentices, or students, to want to open their own academy throughout the Vancouver region!
